National Elephant Day!

August 19, 2019

Sorry that this post is like a week late, but I thought I would still get it up for you all! Elephants are one of my favourite animals in the world, I think they are so graceful and are amazing to see up close.  I am going to share some facts about elephants in this post, just to show how much I love these animals. A quick disclaimer: the image in this blog post is not my own.

  • Elephants are the biggest animals on land.
  • They can eat up to 50 tonnes of food every year.
  • There are two species of elephants (African and Asian).
  • All African elephants have tusks.
  • Only mainly male Asian elephants have tusks.
  • African elephants weigh more than Asian elephants.
  • Asian elephants eat over 100 different types of plants.
  • The average male African elephants weigh up to 6000kg.
  • Male Asian elephants on average weigh 4000kg.
  • The African Forest elephant is the smallest type of elephant, only weighing up to 2000kg.
  • An average baby elephant weighs 100kg.
  • Baby elephants are called calves.
  • African elephant pregnancies last for 22 months, while Asian elephants are between 18-22 months.
  • Just as we can be right-handed or left-handed, elephants have a more dominant tusk.
  • African elephants lifespan is about 70 years, Asian elephants lifespan is just 48 years.
